San Francisco Seasons
Summer in The City by the Bay is as close to perfect as it gets. The cool breezy evenings have an average temperature of 50 degrees and rise to only in the mid seventies in the afternoon. Occasionally, the fog rolls back in during the day and the temperature drops back down into the 50's. Just about daily, there is a 25-30 mph ocean breeze that blows through around 3 pm making this piece of paradise even better.
Visitors to San Francisco are often surprised on their choice of clothing they packed. Wearing shorts during the day and changing into warm clothes that same evening is not a common practice from the climate they came from. Since the San Francisco weather is cold, warm, perfect and all of the above, locals can't complain.
Winter in San Francisco is a little on the wet side. With an annual average of 19.33 inches of rain, the months of November and December see most of that precipitation. However, these are cooler Pacific Ocean storms and not as monsoon like as experienced on other coastlines. Snow is not common here, but the occasional flurry may dust the upper peaks of Mt. Hamilton, Mt. Diablo and Mt. Tamalpais. Every several years light snow does make it's way to San Francisco proper, but it melts as soon as it lands.
Spring in San Francisco is more uncertain than the other seasons. March is usually known as being the month of rain. April is the most unpredictable because it can have afternoon temperatures in the 80's for part of the week and a cooler rainy climate for the remainder. At this point of the year, the hills and local landscaping are a beautiful green and full of life. May fluctuates between overcast and sunny skies with a temperature range in the 60's and low 70's degree mark.
Many would tell you that Fall in San Francisco is their favorite time of year. The days are sunny and warm and the nights are clear and cool. September has an average high temperature of 70 degrees and a low temperature of 55 degrees. October is more of a dry month with very little rain, but does have an extremely pleasant climate. Evenings cool down to a very nice 54 degrees and the afternoon high temperatures peak at an average of 69 degrees. If you enjoy weather more on the cold side, then October is your month. High temps in low 60's and dropping down to a chilly temperature of 50 degrees as the sun sets.
